Añadir al carrito[Np, ca. 1900s1910s. First edition? All published?] Nine captioned color prints (each 12¼ x 9½ inches) housed in an illustrated paper portfolio. Portfolio edge-worn and separated along spine; prints show light soil, minor stains, or toning. Overall, very good. This amusing portfolio is unrecorded in OCLC. Its nine color prints offer a humorous take on childhood and were intended as nursery decorations. The illustrations evoke the style of 19th-century "vinegar Valentines" as well as the early 20th-century work of W.W. Denslow (18561915) and Maxfield Parrish (18701966). Each illustration, credited to "Typ," features children at play or mimicking adult roles. Exaggerated facial expressions and laconic captions create comic scenes that gently satirize each character. Unlike the often biting tone of vinegar Valentines, these images are playful and lighthearted. In "A Sly Cook," a boy-chef prepares to drop an alarmed cat into a cooking pot. "Miss Sophie Starts for a Visit" shows a young girl so overdressed that her little dog appears stunned. The prints use bold, saturated color fields and large, expressive faces reminiscent of W.W. Denslow, best known for illustrating The Wizard of Oz. Two images feature a wooden toy duck, a motif Denslow also used. One print, "A Celebrated Artist," shows a boy painting at an easel with an oversized palette, an image and caption that closely recall Maxfield Parrish's 1909 painting The Artist, Sex, Male, helping to suggest a date for the series. An advertisement on the portfolio's rear flap mentions a "Second Series," which may never have been published. None of the prints or the cover are signed, but the portfolio's title, Amusing Pictures from Typ, suggests the artist used "Typ" as a pseudonympossibly a play on the word "type.".
