Paperback. Condición: Good. After a horrific car accident in 2006, during the fall of his senior year in high school when he was fast becoming one of the best football players in the state of Alabama, Timothy Alexander was paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. His life could have ended then, but to think that means you don't know Timothy Alexander. Since then, he has refused to take no for an answer.Be it large or small, he has taken on every challenge - and taken on the most powerful people in Alabama - when he feels he needs to cure a wrong. That's just the way he's wired. In his wheelchair, he became part of the football program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. And when the state power brokers decided to shut down the program, it was this young man in a wheelchair who rallied a campus, a city and a state to bring the football program back. He won, because he doesn't know any other way to live. Ever Faithful, Ever Loyal'' is Timothy Alexander's emotional and inspirational story. It will make you laugh, and it will make you cry - a lot. A rough childhood, a horrible accident, years of excruciating rehabilitation - all with a smile on his face. He has three degrees now, is an accomplished nationwide speaker and a huge part of the renewed UAB football program. Enjoy Timothy's story, beautifully told along with longtime sports journalist Tim Stephens.…

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. The shifting meanings, from practical to tragic, associated with the structure of a barrack. The Barrack, 1572-1914 tells the little-known history of a building type that many people used to register as an alien interloper in conventionally built-up areas. The barrack is a mostly lightweight construction, a hybrid between a shack, tent, and traditional building. Easy to erect and to take down, it is--after the introduction of railways and later motor vehicles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries--also easy to transplant from one location to another. Originating as a standardized accommodation for semi-permanent military encampments in the late sixteenth century, the barrack became a mass-produced utility of military and civilian mobilization in the nineteenth century, providing immediate shelter for soldiers, prisoners, or displaced persons, as well as well-ventilated hospital wards for the sick. The barrack played a decisive role in shaping the political space of modernity. In>The Barrack, 1572-1914, Robert Jan van Pelt traces nearly 350 years of barrack history up to 1914. That year, in which the Great War broke out, proved to be a turning point in the perception of the barrack, away from pragmatic emergency shelter and towards sinister forced housing. Richly illustrated with two hundred and fifty images, van Pelt's book records the traditions of barrack design and the technological inventiveness that went into it in the late nineteenth century.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. I'd be an Alexander Payne fan even if we didn't share a Nebraska upbringing: he is a masterly, menschy, singular storyteller whose movies are both serious and unpretentious, delightfully funny and deeply moving. And he's fortunate indeed to have such a thoughtful and insightful chronicler as Leo Biga. --Kurt Andersen, Host of Studio 360. Long before Alexander Payne arrived as a world-renowned filmmaker, Leo Adam Biga spotted his talent, even screening his thesis project, The Passion of Martin, at an art cinema. By the time Payne completed Citizen Ruth and prepped Election Biga made him a special focus of his journalism. Interviewing and profiling and Payne became a highlight of the writer's work. Feeling a rapport and trust with Biga, Payne granted exclusive access to his creative process, including a week-long visit to one of his sets. Now that Payne has moved from emerging to established cinema force through a succession of critically acclaimed and popular projects-About Schmidt, Sideways, and The Descendants-Biga has compiled his years of reporting into this book. It is the first comprehensive look anywhere at one of cinema's most important figures. Go behind-the-scenes with the author to glimpse privileged aspects of the filmmaker at work and in private moments. The book takes the measure of Payne through Biga's analysis, the filmmaker's own words, and insights from some of the writer-director's key collaborators. This must read for any casual fan or serious student of Payne provides in one volume the arc of a remarkable filmmaking journey.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. This is the story of back-country Turkey, an area that even in the 20th century remains stubbornly tied to antiquity. The author traveled through it by truck and horseback, often alone. She reached places little visited and never written about. The country people welcomed her with generosity unrelated to their meager resources. She was traveling in time as well, and found significance in recalling the life of Alexander the Great. Twenty-two centuries ago he was the first to dream of a united world.…
