. 4to; pp.[10]., removed; one leaf loose; watermark of R. Munn & Co. (active 1836-1858) on one leaf. Contents: p.[2]: Poem, handwritten, "The Petition of the Letter H to the Inhabitants of Shrewsbury." signed Robt. Evans Trin. Coll. Cam. Two lines have transcription errors; p. [3]: a watercolour of a man and boy on horseback, signed Bala 1836. In the left margin Lady Delamere's name is written in pencil; verso is To The Right Honorable Lady Delamere. P. [5] has a printed poem, The Dying Girl Her Lover, signed S.C., laid down, clipped from The Literary Gazette, London, Vol. 23, 1839; an ink drawing of a dog is on the same page. Pages 6, 8 and 9 have clippings laid down from The Albion, New York, 1839.(pol). Although a letter to the editor of Salopian Shreds and Patches, June 6, 1877, suggests that he is the author, the attribulation of the poem on p. 2 to cleric Robert Wilson Evans (I 789-1866), may be misleading. The verse and its response were very popular and frequently reprinted in 19th century British journals, addressed not only to the inhabitants of Shrewsbury, but of many other counties in England. The editor of the satirical Grub-Street Journal of January 24, 1734 was the first to publish a complaint from the "Humble Petitioner H" who decried the punishing pronunciation of h-letter words. The watercolour on p. [3] may have been painted by Henry Bala Blunt, who was active ca.1837-ca.I843. Henriette Elizabeth Cholmondeley, Lady Delamere (1786-1852) was the wife of Thomas Cholmondeley, Baron Delamere, of Vale Royal Abbey, Cheshire. The Literary Gazette was an infuential and very popular literary magazine published in London from 1817 to 1863. The Albion was "a British colonial and foreign weekly gazette" published in New York from 1822 to 1869.

The album is approximately 28.5 x 22cm. 164 pages, all but 5 liberally covered with black and white cuttings, mostly incorporating their captions, with one image captioned by hand. Lady Cecilia has claimed ownership, adding her name and a small humorous pencil doodle to the inside front board, but both the book itself and the contents look to pre-date her birth, the cuttings being chiefly circa 1848 and most likely put together by her father George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, during his childhood, with an emphasis on battles, the 1848 continental revolutions and, towards the rear, several pages devoted to cuttings of HMS Daedalus's August 1848 encounter with the sea serpent and the whereabouts of Franklin's Arctic Expedition. Other concerns include technological developments, such as the old mail coach postal system being replaced by the railways. The book is reasonably firmly bound in rubbed and battered marbled boards, with black cloth corners and spine strip, the corners are bumped with loss and the hinges are splitting but still quite robust. The contents are slightly stained and marked. A lively and engaging Victorian scrapbook, with excellent provenance, from the family of Wilfrid Hubert Wace Roberts (1900-1991), whose mother was Lady Cecilia Roberts (née Howard), daughter of George and Rosalind Howard.

Softcover. Condición: Good. A scrapbook of handwritten music, some pieces appear to be complete, some might be fragments, some have lyrics, many do not have lyrics. Small quarto. 36pp. Marbled paper wrappers with a calf spine. Wrappers detached but present with significant wear at the spine and edges, most leaves are loose, and nearly every page has tears along the edges, thus good only but all the music remains clear and legible, and there is only one instance in which it appears that a page is missing. An intriguingly eclectic scrap book of collected songs, marches, and fragments, some possibly original, some once popular, and some quite obscure. The most interesting pieces are those related to the 1806 play *Tekeli: or, The Siege of Montgatz* by Theodore Hook. The scrapbook contains three instrumental pieces related to the play, "Count Caraffa's March," "Counsellors March in Tekely" [sic], and "Edmund Led in, Blindfold." We have not been able to find a single piece of music that matches up with any of these, neither in name nor notation. We were able to locate a short piece titled "Tekeli March" credited to Hook's father, James Hook, but it does not match with any of the pieces here. It begs the question of whether or not these were transcribed by ear, given the spelling error in "Tekeli," with the addition of other such errors in the collection (e.g. misspelling Bonaparte as "Bonapark," Tartar as "Tater." Fisher's as "Fischer's," and Malbrouck as "Malbrouk"), or perhaps they are original pieces inspired by the play. Other pieces appear to have been copied directly out of a book, such as those that can be found in the 1809 publication *Original Welsh Airs*, composed chiefly by Joseph Haydn, songs like "The Charms of Meirionydd" and "Moira Rhydlan" including lyrics and correct spellings; or the handful of tunes copied out of the series *Country Dances and Cotillions*, which featured short instrumentals with no credited composers. While we were able to identify most of the material represented here, a few pieces remain a mystery. One instrumental appears to be titled "Marches and Dances in Felceli" but we cannot find anything resembling this piece. Two pieces are simply titled "Waltz," one "Air," and one "Russian Waltz," making the possibility of identifying them quite miniscule. But the biggest mystery of all is the creator of this musical time capsule; there is a signature on the verso of the front wrapper that we believe reads, "M.C. Ghing's," but even if that is correct it doesn't tell us much. What tells us more than any name could is the music this individual spent the time collecting and meticulously copying down. Whether for their studies or simply for fun, this scrapbook illustrates a life lived in music. Viewed today, in a time when any song can be heard instantly from anywhere, this tattered artifact serves as a reminder that music was once a true luxury, something heard only in certain places, and some of it reserved only for certain people. To flip through these pages and see how every bit of each page was used (lyrics going to the very edge of the page, notation spilling over onto the verso of the rear wrapper) demonstrates a deep love for music and all that it can inspire. A wonderfully unique 19th century musical scrapbook. A complete list of titles is available upon request.

This 19th century album is a flower herbarium containing over 35 pages of specimens. About two thirds are identified. Those that are labeled include the order name, botanical name, and common name. The location and date are not mentioned All of the specimens have aged to a brownish color and some of this coloration has bled onto or stained the opposite side of many pages. The flowers are typically arranged with one flower to each page until the back of the album, where several specimens appear to share pages. As is typical with herbariums, some of examples are delicate and are missing sections or sections are loose. The album is not entirely filled, and the suede spine and corners are flaking.

This 10 1/2" x 13 1/2" scrap book photo album was made sometime in the late 1800s, circa 1890s. 61 images, most are albumen photographs. Below each image is a description of the photographers experience of place, a quote from a famous author, or a poem. The album begins with landmarks in Nikko, Japan, and then 11 photographs in and around St. Augustine, Florida. Images from Florida including a lighthouse on the harbor, the sea wall, and the oldest house on Charlott St., among others. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote of Florida (quoted in part here): "Florida, though resembling Italy in climate, is wholly different in the appearance of nature. The green tidiness of England here gives way to a wild and savage ruggedness of beauty. Every tree bursts forth into flowers, wild vines and creepers execute delirious gambels [sic], and weave and interweave in interminable labyrinths". This quote is written below a photo of palm trees and beside an image of deciduous trees covered in Spanish moss. Places pictured include: Rome, Pompeii, Tokyo, Durham (England), Granada, Spain, Venice, Verona, and Genova. Notable landmarks: Ponte Di Rialto The Pantheon of Florence The Basilica of San Zeno The Library of Abbotsford The curator of this album expounds their own thoughts on place, as well as takes quotes from famous thinkers and historic figures: Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Schiller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Ruskin and others. Here is also a portrait of Girolamo Savonarola ascetic and friar who was immolated for heresy and sedition against the church and Pope Alexander VI. Some images are hand tinted. Photographs exhibit a fair amount of fading due to age. The handwriting accompanying the images is uniform script. In good overall condition.
