Paperback. Condición: Good. For centuries Bali has generated provocative - and often conflicting - images in the minds of ethnographers and travellers alike. Professor Boon places our current understanding of Bali within the context of historical views of Balinese life and religion, beginning with the initial Dutch contacts after 1597. He approaches Balinese culture as a 'social romance' of flexible values and actions keyed to native ideals of an enduring hierarchy. In this way, he explains the changing perspectives of Bali throughout the colonial era; the relationship between marriage and caste; the enthusiasm of various outsiders for Balinese arts and lifestyle; and recent political developments, including communist factions and parties modelled on the idea of an ancestral caste. Based on field work in Indonesia as well as historical research, this book is the first thorough study of Balinese social and cultural dynamics. Professor Boon consolidates approaches from structuralism, comparative literature, interaction theory and the analysis of social organisation and social change in order to demonstrate the complex principles that make this island of enduring interest to students of other societies.…

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. This is a thriller, a page-turner, a probing look into the inner workings of the assassination squads that Israel mobilized after the Munich massacre.-David K. Shipler, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Arab and Jew Gratitude is due to Mr. Klein for his painstaking . . . book, the best one could possibly hope for.-Walter Lacquer, The Wall Street Journal Award-winning journalist Aaron J. Klein tells, for the first time, the complete story of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre and the Israeli counterterrorism operation it spawned. In this riveting account, long-held secrets are finally revealed, including who was killed and who was not, how it was done, which targets were hit and which were missed. In the end, Klein shows that the Israeli response to Munich was not simply about revenge, as is popularly believed. By illuminating the tactical and strategic purposes of the Israeli operation, Striking Back allows us to draw profoundly relevant lessons from one of the most important counterterrorism campaigns in history. Paperback. Condición: Good. What are the determinants of democratization? Do the factors that move countries toward democracy also help them refrain from backsliding toward autocracy? This book attempts to answer these questions through a combination of a statistical analysis of social, economic, and international determinants of regime change in 165 countries around the world in 1972-2006, and case study work on nine episodes of democratization occurring in Argentina, Bolivia, Hungary, Nepal, Peru, the Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, and Uruguay. The findings suggest that democracy is promoted by long-term structural forces such as economic prosperity, but also by peaceful popular uprisings and the institutional setup of authoritarian regimes. In the short-run, however, elite actors may play a key role, particularly through the importance of intra-regime splits. Jan Teorell argues that these results have important repercussions both for current theories of democratization and for the international community's effort in developing policies for democracy promotion. …

Paperback. Condición: Good. The 1960s were a period of radical cultural, social, and political upheaval in the United States and around the globe; yet in just three years, between 1969 and 1972, Village Voice "Scenes" columnist, WPLJ FM radio host, and cult figure Howard Smith got to the heart of it all by talking it out?both on and?off the record. As famous as those who passed through the airwaves, Smith encapsulated the end of an era through personal conversations and hard-hitting interviews with Mick Jagger, Frank Zappa, Andy Warhol, Buckminster Fuller, leaders of the feminist movement and the Gay Liberation Front, a NARC agent, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and scores of other iconic and influential personalities, including musicians, artists, filmmakers, actors, writers, politicians, and social activists, from countercultural luminaries to everyday revolutionaries and everyone in between. The Smith Tapes transcribes, for the first time ever, sixty-one of those recorded sessions, from an archive of more than one hundred fifty reels unearthed after more than forty years. Edited by documentary film writer and director/producer Ezra Bookstein, this book reveals the time capsule that Smith ingeniously captured, and contains raw and unscripted talks that take you right into the midst of a transformative cultural and musical explosion.…

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. James Madison, the Father of our Constitution, explained in Federalist 55 that the moral character of a people, molded through education, is the most essential in a nation where people rule. This understanding of education no longer predominates in America. Even as our government takes more of a hand in education than it has traditionally - or than it should constitutionally - it concerns itself primarily with regulating admissions and hiring policies according to race and gender, and with promoting "multicultural" curricula that downplay America's Western heritage. It concerns itself little, if at all, with the character of its citizens. The fact that our government today appears indifferent, or even hostile, to the kind of education America's Founders thought vital to preserving liberty - the kind of education offered at Hillsdale College - suggests that in many ways our government has grown indifferent, or even hostile to liberty itself. Under these circumstances, a large part of the work of Hillsdale College is devoted to promoting liberty and its underlying moral principles nationwide. Central to this mission is Imprimis, a national monthly speech digest of presentations made at Hillsdale conferences and seminars by leaders, writers, and scholars who support limited government, free enterprise, individual rights, personal responsibility and strong national defense. Imprimis was launched thirty years ago with a circulation of only a few thousand. Ten years ago, upon the publication of In the First Place, a collection of the best of Imprimis's first twenty years, its circulation had grown to 335,000. As Imprimis turns thirty, its circulation is well over 1,000,000 - and growing. Educating for Liberty collects thirty of the first 360 speeches published in Imprimis. Some date back to its earliest days; others are quite recent. Each is worth reading. Together they set a high standard as Imprimis looks to the future. Authors include Larry P. Arnn, Russell Kirk, Lynne V. Cheney, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Edwin Meese III, Mark Helprin, Ronald Reagan, George Gilder, John Stossel, Malcolm Muggeridge, Michael Novak, Michael Medved, William J. Bennett, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Margaret Thatcher, and Jesse Helms.…
