Priestley." / The letter is written on Priestley's letterhead bearing his address of 17 Hertford St., Mayfair [London]. / Sir William Overend Prie…stley was a British physician and great nephew of Joseph Priestley. He was educated at King's College and Edinburgh University, becoming a Senate Gold Medalist upon his graduation from Edinburgh. He was a professor of obstetrics at King's College in London, working at King's College Hospital, a position he held from 1862 to 1872. In 1865, Priestley "was appointed Physician-Accoucheur to the Princess of Hesse, and to the members of the Orleans family resident in England" (Smith, p. 121). Priestley was knighted in 1893 and became a conservative Member of Parliament for the universities of Edinburgh and St. Andrews in 1896 â" See: "David Murray Marshall Hall . . ."). He was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (Medical Directory for 1872, p. 198). Priestley is the author of "numerous papers on natural history and medicine" (Smith, p. 121). / The case notes (1870-74) of Priestley and Dr. William Smoult Playfair are held in the King's College Hospital and "describe medical disorders and procedures such as renal disease, pneumonia, rickets, bronchitis, croup, cyanosis, convulsions, diarrhoea, chorea, febricula (fever), essential paralysis, pleurisy, typhoid fever, and congenital heart defect. Ainsworth." Signed in full 'W. Harrison Ainsworth.' Fold in the middle, some general soiling, ink blot from Ainsworth's pen (not affecting text) o/w very good.

He was Speaker of the House 1876-1881. This letter is an early, unfavorable evaluation of President Grant's character, only two weeks after Grant's inauguration as President. "The chie…f characteristic thus far developed is his vindictiveness. He must have much changed from the time when he received Lee's surrender. But we shall see the end is not yet.".

The saurviving text is as follows: "[.] you had expressed your [omissions] save specimens for me, otherwise I could [omissions] used the freedom of making t…his application. | I have been occupied more than two years in examining the optical structure of Crystals of all kinds; but I have expeienced the greatest difficulty in procuring specimens for investigation. As I am now cpompleting my paper on the subject for the Royal Society I am particularly anxious to [loss of text till subscription] I am Sir | Yours Most Faithfully | D Brewster." Short list follows in another hand: "Capt Colby | Drawing Room | Tower", presumably the Colby who features in Brewster's encyclopedia entry "Pendulum"), conceivably Brewster's correspondent. See Wikipedia, Thomas Frederick Colby, In 1815 Colby worked from Tower [NOTE list in text] map office, but in 181617 he was again in the field, carrying the triangulation round the eastern coast towards Orkney.s and Shetland, and in the latter year, in conjunction with Gardner, measured the base-line of Belhelvie Links, near Aberdeen, the only base-line in Scotland. He was also engaged in observations in Shetland with Édouard Biot, who had been deputed by the Institut de France to make pendulum and other observations there in connection with the prolongation of the arc of the meridian".

Note: A fascinating Wikipedia entry includes the information that he was MP for St Ives in 1830, and a friend of Thomas Moore and Lord Byron. Also his "dissipation".

Very Good. "My dear Sir, | I hope that Paymaster Binney may in some way have an opportunity of purging himself from the suspicions under which he has falle…n. I know not how this is to be done, & I only ask for justice. | Faithfully yours, | Charles Sumner." Col. Amos Binney [1830-1880] was Chief Paymaster of the United States Army during the Civil War. According to the Alexandria Gazette, Binney was "a paymaster of long standing in the service, being entrusted with several millions of dollars. . . [He] converted three millions of it into seven-thirty bonds and deposited them in the Norfolk and other banks. Complaints being made to the Paymaster General that the bank of Richmond were charging soldiers who had been paid off in these bonds a heavy discount, which resulted in the instant transfer of Colonel Binney to the National Capital for examination." [Alexandria Gazette, Volume 71, Number 177, 26 August 1865, page 1.] Newspapers around the nation reported that Binney was suspected of having made thirty or forty thousand dollars by buying up these heavily discounted bonds. Binney was given the option of restoring the funds unlawfully in his possession and being honorably discharged, or appearing before a court martial. Seventeen other implicated paymasters had already been cashiered. Binney, according to news reports, had decided to take his chances at trial. But Paymaster General Brice informed Secretary of War Stanton, on 26 December 1865, that Binney had made restitution; though the restitution was an admission of the criminal malfeasanse alleged, Brice opined that prosecution was not appropriate. Binney was mustered out of service. [Cleveland Daily Leader, 20 Nov. 1865, Page 1; The Daily Phoenix, 15 Nov. 1865, Page 1.].

Sumner's signature at the end has an ink smudge partially affecting the "C" in his first name. Because Sumner's handwriting was terrible, we have made a couple of leaps of faith in our translation. Very Good. Sumner [1811-18…74] would die in office as a leading Republican Senator devoted to equal rights for Blacks, and to preventing the former Rebels from reversing the results of the War. Thus Sumner sought to diminish their political influence by delaying the return of the Rebel States to full participation in the polity. Writing from his Boston home, he seeks information related to his Reconstruction policies. His note reads, in full: "Please send me " [1] Mr. Harlan's Bill of Dec. '61 on Provg civil Govts for the rebel States. "[2] Mr. Sumner's bill or substitute for Confiscation Bill. April or May '62. "[3] Mr. S___s bill for arming negroes. "Much oblige | Yours truly, | Charles Sumner.".

Founded in 1898, the Society is not to be confused with the earlier, German "Albrecht Dürer Verein." Soiled at one margin; otherwise very good.

Añadir al carritoA difficult letter to decipher regarding origins, but most likely written to John Ruskin or Noel Humphries by an editor of a journal, based on the content, especially in that the opening words query the recipient's intent to possibly write or speak lines by way of eulogy for J. W. Turner, the famed English painter who had just p…assed away. Ruskin was one of Turner's greatest proponents, drawing widespread attention to Turner in Ruskin's "Modern Painters" (1843). As well, the writer mentions "Ten Centuries" in the letter, referring to Noel Humphreys' book, "Ten Centuries of Art," published in 1852. "Wednesday. My dear Sir, I suppose you will have some last words on Turner? Did you not suggest that the Pre-Raphaelite section of the "Ten Centuries" might be shortened? I think it might, with advantage. If you call, on your way home, today instead of tomorrow, I shall be happy to see you, Very Truly Yours, "A. J. Airstead" [sic, ? undetermined]. Thin gray paper mounted onto beige paper.
