Solly conducted experiments on the effects of electricity on plant growth and was involved in the Great Exhibition of 1851, where he served as a juror. He published a significant paper on iodine's electrical conductivity at 17 and later authored Rural Chemistry (1843). Solly also contributed to genealogical and literary studies, editing works on hereditary titles and publishing in various periodicals.
