Hardcover. English. See images for condition. About the book >.>.> The Golden Legend was compiled about 1260 by Jacobus de Voragine, who later, in 1292, became Archbishop of Genoa. The diverse sources of his book range from the 2nd century to the 13th century and are primarily stories of saints, and an expansion of the often sparse details in the Gospels of the lives of Christ and his mother. Many of the stories of saints are amazing and, to the modern reader, quite unbelievable. Indeed, since the Council of Trent in the 16th century, the Church has dealt severely with these fantastic stories. But the Golden Legend was eagerly read in the Middle Ages, and its popularity is attested by the fact that some one thousand manuscripts have survived. After the Bible, it was the most widely read book. With the invention of printing in the 1450s, the book was readily available both in the original Latin and in the developing vernacular languages of Western Europe. Artists and craftsmen, including the alabaster carvers of England, were inf.
