A tight, bright book that is two inches thick with colorful plates of historical importance. No defects noted. Human anatomy, the morphological study of the architecture of the human body, based on dissection has given rise to the publication of some outstanding illustrated books. The Complete treatise of human anatomy by J. M. Bourgery and N. H. Jacob. published in Paris between 1831 and 1854, while joining a long list of illustrated works. at the same time represents one of the most remarkable works in the whole history of anatomy, and in any case is the most outstanding to be published in the J 9th century. The work is monumental and. it comprises eight volumes of text totaling 829 pages and atlas volumes with 725 plates. representing a total of 3750 figures. Anatomical knowledge was for a long time limited to data gathered from the dissection of animals by Galen (c. 130- 200). a Greek physician who practised in Pergamon and Rome and whose influence was considerable right up until the 16th century. In the Middle Ages. the only work on anatomy truly worthy of the name was that of Mondino dei Luzzi (c. 1275-1326). written in 1319 and titled Anathomia. Taking up the data of Galen he made some interesting observations on the basis of human dissections he had undertaken in 1315. These works were disseminated in the form of ' manuscript copies and were very sparsely illustrated.
