Head and tail of spine worn and slightly bumped. Page edges are well discoloured-- mostly at the head edge. Free endpapers, pastedowns and most pages throughout are discoloured due to age. Binding is neat and tidy, this book is in good condition. The dustjacket is rubbed and well thumbed at the edges. Creased towards some edges and corners. Some discolouration front and back. The back cover bears some scuffing and light scratches. Spine sunned. Head and tail of spine bears some wear and tear. The first issue points are as follows: (1) The copyright page states: 'First Published in Australia and New Zealand by Scribe Publications 2003' (and there are no numbers indicating a print run, i.e., 123456789); (2) the correct author photo appears on the dust jacket, featuring the author in a white shirt (another photo was substituted in reprinted editions); (3) word SCRIBE on the inside rear dust jacket flap is not contained in brackets, as is the case in the reprint editions; and (4) the word MELBOURNE appears on rear inside dust jacket flap in this first state dust jacket (it does not appear in reprint editions).

With love, Greg Roberts, August 2003". The florid inscription covers most of the page. The invitation is dated 9 August 2003, so presumably inscribed by the author at the book's launch. The FIRST AUSTRALIAN EDITION with all first edition points, as follows: facsimile handwriting to rear panel of dustjacket (the author's longhand version of the book's first paragraph); the words 'Scribe' and 'Melbourne' NOT in brackets on the rear inner dustjacket flap (the word 'Melbourne' does not appear below 'Scribe' in the reprint); close-up b&w photo of author in white shirt on rear inner dustjacket flap; copyright page states "First published in Australia and New Zealand by Scribe Publications 2003" (& no additional reprint details, nor numbers indicating print run). In the reprints the bold brackets were added to the word 'Scribe' on the rear inner dustjacket flap, plus the photograph of the author is a different shot from the first printing (the reprint shows the author face-on with a slight smile, whereas for the first edition the author has turned his head toward the camera & is not smiling). The author photograph is by Maurice Grant-Drew in both the first edition & reprints. The Australian edition preceded all others, & was first published in 2003, followed by the US & UK editions, which both appeared in 2004.
