Collier Schorr [b. 1963] is an American artist and fashion photographer best known for adolescent portraits that blend photographic realism with elements of fiction and youthful fantasy. Her work explores a multitude of themes, including history, nationality, and war, with an emphasis on identity and gender. All Polaroids for this book were made with a Graflex Crown 4x5 camera between the years of 2001 and 2006. Primarily handheld. This book is a photo-documentary of sorts of the history and present of a small city in Germany. The Title, August, may be an homage; the photographer states: "I felt both a documentarian like August Sander and a war photographer from any time period." August is the third volume in a series of books entitled Forests and Fields (Wald und Wiesen), following Neighbors/Nachbarn (2006) and Flowers/Blumen (2010). 'Forests and Fields' is intrinsically about book making, an ongoing suite of artist's books that utilizes traditional notions of category to create different points of view. Each publication is part diary, photo annual, palimpsest, and scrapbook, and involves a process which constantly expands and contradicts the artist's oeuvre through re-edits of the work to create new views through the material.
