"As Snyder's involvement in environmental issues and his teaching grew, he seemed to move away from poetry for much of the 1980s and early 1990s. However, in 1996 he published the complete Mountains and Rivers Without End, a mixture of the lyrical and epic modes celebrating the act of inhabitation on a specific place on the planet. This work was written over a 40-year period. It has been translated into Japanese, French and Russian." wikipedia.

An association copy, inscribed on the half-title page: "For Steve, Gary Snyder, II.XII.96." The recipient is his fellow poet and neighbor, on the San Juan Ridge,Steve Sanfield--a really nice association as such. Sanfield was the author of more than thirty books of poetry, haiku, children's literature, and folk tales. Michael McClure described him as "the master of American haiku," and Snyder himself dubbed Sanfield "the master of myth, lore, and word-hoard."From Sanfield's estate by way of Sore Dove Press publisherSoheyl Dahi. This is Snyder's epic masterpiece, decades in the making. A fine copy in green paper boards with a red cloth spine; in a near fine jacket with a few spot and a faint crease at the top of the front panel.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. First edition. A great association copy of Snyder's epic, inscribed in the year of publication on the half-title page: "For Caryl and Clayton, ' . . . the foolish loving spaces full of heart,' 17.XI.96, To be together feasting in Ypsilanti . . . Gary Snyder." The poet, translator, and editor Clayton Eshleman was a close friend of Snyder's from early on. Eshleman met Snyder in 1962 and upon his recommendation moved to Kyoto to teach English for several years, where he overlapped with Snyder in Japan. In 1966, Eshleman foundedCaterpillar magazine which published Snyder's work (including, for example, the first appearance of "The Blue Sky") and later he started and editedSulfur. Both he and Snyder (and along with key figures like Jerome Rothenberg) shared a lasting interest in enthnopoetics. After years in Los Angeles, he moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan--mentioned in the inscription--to teach at Eastern Michigan University where he would spend the rest of his career. Among his many honors are the National Book Award in Translation and several Guggenhiem Awards.Notably,Snyder and Eshleman are also both featured in the bookOut of the Westfrom Lord John Press, and copy signed by all contributors is included here.A fine book in fine jacket. A superbassociation.
