The watershed event in our country's experience witnessed the first strategic use of railroads, the telegraph, crude machine guns, iron ships and a host of other "firsts." It also beheld the first sinking of an enemy ship by a submarine. The CSS Hunley's success off Charleston, South Carolina against the USS Housatonic is well documented. What has never been written of before, however, is that the little ill~fated Hunley was but one of a large number of operational Civil War submarines. Author Mark Ragan has spent years mining manuscript repositories. What he has discovered is nothing short of revolutionary. Contrary to popular belief, information contained in recently discovered contemporary letters, reports, diaries, telegrams, factory records, and log books confirm that both large and small submarines were fabricated and launched by both sides. Federal submarines were built and tested in Newark, New York, and Philadelphia, and utilized in Hampton Roads, the James River, and off Charleston, South Carolina. The Federal government even set up a committee to determine which submarine proposals were sound enough to pursue.
