"Tanks and Trenches" is a superb collection of first hand accounts of the largely forgotten exploits of tank units in WW1. The nucleus of David Fletcher's text is a series of veteran accounts published by the British Army's Royal Tank Corps Journal from 1921 to 1924 under the title of 'Tank Actions for the Month'. Additional primary accounts and period photos from the archives of the Tank Museum at Bovington, UK are used create a seamless narrative that flows from the first tank actions at Flers in September 1916 to the Armistice in November 1918. The narrative's focus is on British tankers, but a series of short sections are given to French, German and American tank units. The French contribution is written by the commander of a Renualt FT company during the battle of Hamel and Maj.-Gen.J.F.C. Fueller provides a recount from primary sources of the experiences of the German 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Panzer Abteilungen at Villers-Bretonneux. Ref A5 7.
