Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Another instalment of the highly acclaimed "Design" series, this time looking at contemporary designer David Gentleman (b.1930). David's early training engraving designs on small boxwood blocks ensured that his unique style retains the characteristic intensity of the miniaturist even when it is e…nlarged. He attended the Royal College of Art in Kensington from the autumn of 1950, and was tutored by some of the finest artists of the time, including Edward Bawden and John Nash. Lithography became his medium of choice and he has since worked on projects as diverse as designs for postage stamps and wine labels to the hundred-metre long panels at Charing Cross Station. The "Design" series is the winner of the Brand/Series Identity Category at the British Book Design and Production Awards 2009, judges said: 'A series of books about design, they had to be good and these are. The branding is consistent, there is a good use of typography and the covers are superb.'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Laminated patterned boards, 8vo, 95, [1] pp, colour ills. From the blurb: " Although his work is drawing-based, Gentleman, a former Master of the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry, has involved himself in a wide range of media from the theatre to political propaganda. His highest profile public works include the hundred-me…tre long mura; on Charing Cross Underground Station, and the many designs for sets of stamps, including those celebrating Concorde, the life of Winston Churchill and the ninth centenary of the Battle of Hastings. His book illustrations range from 1950s classics such as Patience Gray's Plats du Jour, or Foreign Food, to lush private press editions of Kipling's Jungle Book and The Swiss Family Robinson. He has also written and illustrated several works for children, as well as idiosyncratic travel books detailing aspects of the life, landscape and buildings of Britain, France, Italy and India, which have brought him face to face with all aspects of book production. As Alan Bennett says in the Foreword, although David Gentleman 'has ranged the world in his subject matter', he remains a very English artist." Near Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper.
