From the discovery of the foundation trench of an enormous building, two hundred feet in diameter, it is possible to reconstruct the appearance of this ambitious creation, and also to explore its purpose. What contemporary chroniclers said about the project, building materials inventories from the royal accounts, medieval romances, and earlier descriptions of round table festivals ~ all confirm the archaeological evidence. What takes shape is the clear probability of knights meeting to reenact the Arthurian romances, in a setting designed to show off Edward's power and prestige at a crucial moment in his attempts to lay claim to the throne of France. At a time when secular orders of knighthood were almost unknown, Edward, looking to rally support for his military adventures, had declared his intention to found an Order of the Round Table with three hundred knights. His ambitious scheme, however, was overtaken by events: his victory at Crecy in 1346 established his reputation, and the order which he founded four years later was the much more exclusive Order of the Garter, made up of the commanders who had helped him to win the campaign. The Round Table building, abandoned, was eventually pulled down in the 1360s.…
