From this viewpoint symptoms are seen to be bodily expressions of psychological conflicts, able through their symbolism to reveal the patient's current problems. In the first part of this book we therefore present the theoretical presuppositions underlying this approach and ex- pound a philosophy of illness. We recommend strongly that this first part be read carefully and in detail - possibly more than once before turning to Part 2.
