Paperback. 8.5 x 11 inches. Paperback. 96 pages. "Design Bindings: a Retrospective, is a testament to Don Etherington's legacy as a fine binder. The books it illustrates depict an unbroken chain of work spanning a lifetime and reflecting the stylistic influences of their period-each an elegant feat of craftsmanship. The underlyi…ng principles embodied in Etherington's conceptualization and execution of these works are monumental, his influence on professional standards-timeless." - Randy Silverman, PBSA "For those generally interested in fine bindings, this is the next best thing to having the bindings in hand. Highly Recommended." - Frank Lehmann, Guild of Book Workers Newsletter, April 2017 A catalogue and appreciation of Etheringtons achievements over a long and distinguished career, printed for the occasion of a retrospective exhibition at HEC Montreal, May-September 2016. Don Etherington is married to Monique Lallier, a very prominent artist binder. The book includes introductory words by Don Etherington, Jonathan Tremblay (President of ARA Canada), and Maureen Clapperton (Director, Miriam & J. Robert Ouimet Library, HEC Montreal), and an essay by John MacKrell. In addition to color illustrations and descriptions of the bindings in the exhibition, the catalogue also shows bindings not in the exhibition, as well as custom bindings by friends, students, and colleagues for his earlier book Book Binding and Conservation: A Sixty Year Odyssey of Art and Craft. Don Etherington began bookbinding at the age of thirteen and went on to study at the London School of Printing. He has held positions at the Biblioteca Nazionale in Florence, The Library of Congress, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and Information Conservation, Inc. He has received awards from the American Institute for Conservation and the Guild of Book Workers, and his work can be found in collections worldwide. Bookbinding (ilustrador).
