So would all those who came after them. These victims of conflict in old England hoped to find peace in New England. Winthrop, for one, had experienced much conflict in his life. As a Puritan, he was opposed to Catholicism and Anglicanism, both of which, he believed, were burdened by distracting rituals and distant hierarchies.
