FRONT JACKET PHOTO BY: Gregg Eligh. BACK JACKET PHOTO BY: Jim Wiley. CONTENTS: Prologue 1. A Small-town Boy 2. Broken Legs and Triple Axels 3. The Emerging Artist 4. The Long Wait 5. Top of the Podium 6. The Battle of the Brians; Epilogue; Appendix. SYNOPSIS: This is the remarkable story of a boy from a small town who became the most accomplished male figure skater in Canada in the 1980s, and his country's best hope for a gold medal at the Calgary Winter Olympics. Brian Orser talks about his career with candor and insight. From the time, nearly two decades ago, when he showed off his leaps and spins for world champion Donald Jackson, to the fateful moment in Calgary, in February, 1988, when he decided not to attempt a second triple Axel in his long program, he reveals what it took to break into the tiny elite of world-class figure skaters. In Orser: A Skater's Life, we experience the long struggle of a superb athlete striving to achieve excellence: the lonely, pre-dawn practice sessions; the sacrifices made and support given by his family; the ego-bruising and confidence-building early competitions; and the unexpected camaraderie among the skaters themselves. Here is the inside story of the skating world: the complex and controversial scoring system, the politics, the personality conflicts, the role of the media. Here, too, are portraits of the people who matter to Brian Orser: his coach, Doug Leigh; his choreographer, Uschi Keszler; his parents and family; and fellow skaters Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Katarina Witt, Barbara Underhill and many others. Brian Orser takes the reader onto the ice, to what may be the most stressful and solitary situation experienced by any athlete. There, in the glare of the spotlight, before a hushed audience, we share the triumph of extraordinary achievement, and the desolation of unimaginable defeat. This is a sports book that reaches far beyond the audience of fans to touch all those who admire persistence, dedication and courage. Brian Orser was born in Belleville, Ontario, in December, 1961--just a few months before Donald Jackson, on whose career Brian Orser's was in many ways modeled, won Canada's first men's world figure skating championship in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The Orser family subsequently moved to Midland where, with the unstinting backing of his parents, Brian Orser pursued his skating career. In Sarajevo in 1984, he broke into international prominence by winning the silver medal. This, together with regular national championship wins and a world championship victory in 1987, made him Canada's best hope for Olympic gold at the Calgary Winter Games in 1988. The result of the thrilling "Battle of the Brians" is known to virtually all Canadians. After graduating in history from the University of Western Ontario, and a brief stint as a semi-professional football player, Steve Milton moved to Orillia where, from 1979 to 1986, he was sports editor of the Orillia Packet and Times. It was in this professional capacity that he first saw Brian Orser skate. In the decade that followed their first meeting, Steve Milton was the only Canadian, and one of a handful of North American writers, to cover both world championship and Olympic figure skating events. He brings to this book not only the insight gained from his long friendship with Brian Orser, but also the knowledge of an astute observer of the sport. Steve Milton has won eight Western Ontario Newspaper Awards. He now covers the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team for the Hamilton Spectator. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.
