Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a detailed research study into the use of polyethylene film box liners for Golden Delicious apples in storage. It assesses the use of sealed, non-sealed, and perforated liners. The liners were studied for their effect on moisture loss, firmness, colour, decay, storage scald, respiration rate, and atmospheric changes within the liners in refrigerated storage for up to 8 months followed by 6 days at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The authors had conducted studies over a nine year period, beginning in 1953. They conclude that polyethylene liners are an effective tool for preventing moisture loss and shriveling, and that non-sealed or perforated liners are as effective as sealed liners when used with oiled wraps. The authors also determined that sealed liners had a beneficial effect on firmness and delayed ripening, but noted that scald was sometimes increased, which could be offset by using oiled wraps. The book provides apple growers and storage operators with helpful information to maintain the quality and extend the shelf life of Golden Delicious apples in storage.
