This book details the trial of William Sacheverell and 19 others for their involvement in riots connected to the surrender of Nottingham's charter and the election of their mayor under the new charter granted by King James II. This book positions Sacheverell's trial within the context of the broader attack on corporation charters throughout England at the time, to which the king had been encouraged after his success in the Quo Warranto against the City of London. The author presents the arguments of both sides, providing a thematic exploration of tensions between the people's right to elect their representatives and the Crown's desire to exert control over local government. One of the many books printed following the so-called "Popish Plot" of 1678, this work offers a fascinating glimpse into the political and religious atmosphere of the later 17th century.
