This book presents a brief historical account of the Methodist church and explains the split between the Methodist Episcopal and Methodist Protestant branches. The Methodist Episcopal hierarchy is characterized by an aristocratic system, granting select traveling ministers nearly all authority over decisions, while the Methodist Protestant branch is structured to be more democratic and representative. The author claims that despite its success, the Methodist Episcopal church's anti-republican structure is in contradiction with the teachings of Jesus Christ. The author argues that the Methodist Protestant church follows Christ's teachings more closely and is, therefore, the more legitimate expression of Methodism.
