This book examines the deadly historical clash in 778 AD at the Battle of Roncesvalles, where the Frankish rearguard led by Roland was ambushed and massacred by Basque mountaineers guarding the pass of Roncevaux in the Pyrenees, in a devastating blow to Charlemagne's imperial ambitions in the Iberian Peninsula. The author uses primary sources to bring to life the events of the battle and the characters involved. The book explores the strategic significance of the battle, the political machinations in Charlemagneâs court, and the heroic ideals of chivalry in the early Middle Ages. It sheds light on the transformation of the battle into a legend through the centuries, the influence of epic poems and folklore that romanticized Roland and his comrades, and its enduring place in French national identity. This book will appeal to readers interested in medieval history, warfare, and the enduring power of storytelling.
