This book explores and documents the state of prisons in 19th century Scotland and the north of England, revealing the inhumane and often overcrowded conditions prisoners endured. While some prisons exhibited positive signs of kindness from their jailers, most prisoners suffered from lack of hygiene, food, clothing, religious instruction, and meaningful work, as well as the absence of separation between tried and untried prisoners or male and female prisoners. The author offers suggestions for improvement including regular inspections, improved classification, religious instruction, and employment, all within the context of a larger discussion of the importance of prison reform in reducing crime rates and improving society as a whole. The book provides a valuable historical perspective on the evolution of prison systems and the ongoing need for reform.
