The astronomer in charge, N. R. Pogson, had long been frustrated by the lack of suitable equipment, which had severely limited the scope of observations. Much of the work carried out at Madras had simply copied and reproduced findings from other establishments. Eager to rectify this, Pogson worked tirelessly over many years to secure the necessary funding to acquire a state-of-the-art Transit Circle, similar to one recently installed at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. The new instrument, supplied by the renowned firm Troughton and Simms, was brought into service in 1862, and this book contains the first three years of observations made with it. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
