The author delves into the literary history of this epic poem, which tells the story of a prince who is exiled and forced to serve as a kitchen scullion before eventually reclaiming his rightful place as heir to a kingdom. The author considers the poem within the broader context of the oral traditions of the time period, as well as the later development of the Havelok saga. The author also examines various versions of the story that originated in England and Scandinavia, with a focus on the relationship between the French poem and these later iterations. Questions of authorship, source material, and the nature of the poem as a "lai" are also explored. Ultimately, this book sheds light on the complex literary landscape of the Middle Ages, offering insights into the evolution of epic storytelling and the transmission of oral traditions across cultures.
