This book suggests that the abundance of paper money issued by banks and other lenders has been a crucial factor in the rapid increase in the price of goods and services that has marked the current era. While the Bank of England has been the primary source of the increased money supply, it has been aided by a multitude of private banks and other lenders who have flooded the country with their own promissory notes, which are often accepted as currency. The author argues that this overabundance of paper money has caused the value of the currency to plummet, thereby increasing the cost of living for ordinary people. The book offers a historical perspective on the role of money in society and analyzes the potential long-term consequences of the current monetary situation. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding the causes of inflation and the need for sound monetary policies to manage it effectively, thus revealing valuable insights into the complex relationship between money and the economy.
