This book describes the author's detailed account of four methods used by the Scripps Tuna Oceanography Research Program to measure incident solar radiation, submarine daylight, chlorophyll, and primary production in the eastern tropical Pacific. These methods were used on multiple cru…ises and expeditions from 1956-1962, and are described in this book along with a partial evaluation of their statistical reliability. The author examines the relation between observed daily radiation totals and similar totals computed from four climatological equations which use cloud-cover observations, before going on to discuss the submarine irradiance, including definitions and instrumentations, as well as experimental setups and calculations. Additionally, the author discusses the optical depth determinations, including the diffuse attenuation coefficient, and the chlorophyll, inclusive of sample collection, sample treatment, pigment extraction, and determination of chlorophyll concentration.
