This book details the history and mission of the Royal Geographical Society, a British institution dedicated to the advancement of geographical knowledge and exploration, from its founding in 1830 to the dawn of the twentieth century. The book delves into the motives and backgrounds of the organization's founders, their expeditions and research, the impact of their work on the development of geography as a scientific discipline, and their legacy of scientific exploration that continues to inspire and inform modern geographers. The author presents a vivid account of the Victorian era of exploration, examining how exploration societies like the Royal Geographical Society expanded knowledge of the Earth and its peoples, drove imperial expansion, and influenced scientific thought of the time. Blending historical narrative with analysis of the Society's role in the development of geography, the book offers a fresh perspective on the significance of exploration in shaping our understanding of the world.
