Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book details the findings of physical examinations of nearly a million recruits from the first American draft of World War I. These examinations provide a census of the physical condition of the people of the United States at the time. The physical examination standards were adjus…ted during the period under study. Beginning with a rigor comparable to that of the recruiting standards of the pre-war days, the standards became more liberal for the local boards from July 1917 to February 1918. A study of the percentage of rejections at mobilization camps shows great fluctuation at the different camps, due to a variation in ideals of physical examining boards. The author concludes that the variability in rejectability of different diseases and defects suggests that the physical examination standards were too lenient in the early months of mobilization, especially in the matters of flat feet and hernia. Overall, this book provides an extensive amount of valuable data on the health and physical condition of the United States population during World War I.
