Written in the waning years of the Middle Ages, Villon's complex and thought-provoking verse echoed and reimagined themes that first emerged in the Roman de la Rose. Through a meticulous comparison of the two works, this scholarly study traces the evolution of ideas, from the courtly love traditions and allegorical frameworks of the earlier masterpiece to the raw emotional intensity and dark humor of Villon's poetry. The author demonstrates how Villon's unique voice synthesized the literary past with his own experiences, resulting in a groundbreaking contribution to the development of French literature.
