This book analyzes the cell movements and degeneration processes of the amphibian Triton cristatus at the beginning of its developmental process known as gastrulation. The author observed a remarkable variability in the movements and a complex choreography of protoplasmic behaviors. Th…e author's approach is remarkable in several ways. First, the author studied the cells outside of the context of the whole embryo, isolating them so that the cell's autonomous processes could be seen more clearly. Secondly, using a variety of techniques, the author showed that the movements were not due to external causes, but due to internal factors within the cells themselves. The author shows how the diversity of movements is produced by the interplay of two types of plasma: a dense plasma containing the solid components of the cell, and a clear, viscous plasma, rich in proteins. The author shows how the movements of a cell are determined by the formation and interconversion of these two types of plasma. This demonstration of the existence of a set of complex and diverse movements produced by internal factors within the cell's own protoplasm is, as the author claims, likely to have broad significance for our understanding of the most basic processes underlying development.
