This in-depth 19th-century historical account of Revolutionary France reveals the central role of the Commune of Paris in facilitating the sale of the Catholic Church's assets. In doing so, the book highlights that this collective action allowed bourgeois citizens to act as intermediaries between the national government and private buyers, ultimately leading to a dramatic shift in property ownership. What could have resulted in the slow, piecemeal sale of former church properties to a small group of wealthy buyers was instead transformed into a windfall for the French government, which was struggling to stabilize its finances. This historical work details the challenges and processes of the Church's disestablishment, providing a valuable glimpse into a defining moment of the French Revolution.
