This book sheds light on the nature of academic freedom and power structures within universities, focusing on the unjust dismissal of Professor Joel Spingarn from Columbia University in 1911. The author presents an insider's view of the events leading up to Spingarn's dismissal, including the university's suppression of his resolution to acknowledge the work of a colleague who had recently been fired, and the subsequent threats made by university president Nicholas Murray Butler to curtail his academic pursuits. Through Spingarn's own letters and personal accounts, the book exposes the abuse of authority and the struggle for intellectual independence at the heart of educational institutions. Ultimately, it serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of academic freedom and the dangers of institutional suppression of dissenting voices, demonstrating the pivotal role that scholarly autonomy plays in ensuring open and progressive intellectual exchange.
