This book delves into the historical issue of Old Age Pauperism in England and Wales, analysing its causes and potential solutions through the lens of a Royal Commission and Mr. Charles Boothâs private study. The book explores the extent of pauperism among the elderly, its underlying causes such as insufficient wages, and the existing means of addressing this problem through the Poor Law, charity, and thrift. The author presents the opinions of witnesses before the Commission and those involved in charitable work, highlighting the debate between those who advocate for state pensions and those who emphasize self-help. The book concludes by examining the effectiveness of the current Poor Law system and offers insights into potential reforms and the role of the state in alleviating old-age poverty.
