This book inspects the transformation of computer communication standards in the late 20th century, a period ignited by the commercialization of packet switching technology. It details the development of X.25, a standard that interfaced disparate data terminal equipment to shared communications networks, helping to connect proliferating computer systems and fostering the commercial growth of packet networks. The book scrutinizes the economic, political, and technical drivers that shaped the X.25 standard and the ways in which the standardization process for computer communications differed from traditional telecommunication standards processes. Through this case study, the author articulates several key lessons for the development of modern standards in an era of rapid technological change and diverse market forces.
