This book details a two-year field study of irrigation management and controlled drainage techniques, to reduce subsurface flows and constituent loads. The author's hope is for irrigation management and controlled drainage during the growing season to be used to reduce deep percolation, encouraging crop use of the water table without sacrificing soil salt balance. The study was conducted in three west side fields, located in Broadview, Panoche, and Westlands Water Districts. Two of the fields were planted to tomatoes and the other to cotton. Data indicated that irrigation management and controlled drainage management techniques resulted in limiting deep percolation to inches, while upflux was calculated at inches. Approximately 15% more salts and 12% more boron left the field in the drainage effluent than was applied through the irrigation water. Salinity monitoring over the course of the 1989 season showed an apparent upward trend in salinity levels, though was determined not to be statistically significant.
