The system was designed to phase out slavery over several years so as to prepare emancipated people for independence. The author analyzes the system's legal provisions and the ways they were implemented in practice, showing how the system was undermined and ultimately rendered ineffective by the colonists, with the tacit approval of the British government. The author also discusses the impact of the system on the lives of the apprentices. The book is an important contribution to the study of British colonialism and the history of slavery and emancipation. It sheds light on a significant chapter in world history and the enduring legacy of slavery and colonialism in the present day.
