The Assyrians derived their historical writing from the Babylonians, who recorded not deeds in war but building operations, particularly those in honor of the gods. The Assyrians began with a similar focus but gradually began to inscribe more data. We do not see true annalistic inscriptions until approximately 1100 B. C., with the reign of Tiglath Pileser I. The author discusses the problems with using these inscriptions as sources for Assyrian history and their development as historical records, illustrating how different sources and editions had varying levels of accuracy and completeness. Through this, the author demonstrates that the most accessible editions are often the latest and poorest and that discovering which documents are the most nearly contemporaneous is the key to a correct understanding of Assyrian history.
