This fascinating recollection provides an insider's view into the political landscape of mid-Victorian Britain through the eyes of John Evelyn Denison, Speaker of the House of Commons from 1857-1872. Denison's detailed journal entries offer an intimate glimpse into the workings of Parliament, parliamentary procedure, and the major political and social issues of the time, including the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Crimean War, and the passing of the Reform Bill. The book also provides a unique perspective on the role of the Speaker in maintaining order, interpreting the rules, and mediating debates within the House. Denison's insights shed light on the historical context and motivations behind many significant political events, making this book an invaluable resource for historians, political scientists, and anyone interested in British parliamentary history.
