This book is a comprehensive study of the institution and economy of rural chapters in medieval England, focusing on their functions, which included the publication of church canons, the gathering of church alms, and the detection and suppression of vice. These chapters, presided over by rural deans, were subordinate to the bishop's authority and met monthly or quarterly to transact business and enforce discipline. The book examines the role of rural chapters in the broader context of medieval church governance and their contribution to the maintenance of religious and moral standards within their communities.
