This book, a collection of epigrams composed by the Roman poet Martial, offers a fascinating glimpse into the social and cultural landscape of the early Roman Empire. Written during the reign of Domitian, the epigrams provide a unique perspective on the lives of Romans from all walks of life, from the emperor himself to ordinary citizens, slaves, and even animals. Moving beyond praise and flattery of his patrons, the author concerns himself with everyday realities, human foibles, and social injustice. Composed with wit and incisive language, the epigrams cover a wide range of subjects, including love, friendship, wealth, poverty, and mortality. Together, they form a multifaceted and insightful portrait of Roman society under the early empire.
