His early experiences as a youth preacher and elder marked his devotion to his faith, and he became widely known in the New England region for his oratorical skills. As an author and editor, Ruter sought to spread Methodist doctrine and helped shape early Methodism. His leadership extended to the field of education, where he played a pivotal role in establishing seminaries of learning such as Newmarket Academy and Augusta College, which later became a chartered institution that granted degrees. Ruter's pursuit of diverse interests exemplifies the expansion of the Methodist movement in the 19th century and the contributions of individuals like him to its development.
