Johannes Adam Simon Oertel, a 19th century German-born artist who immigrated to the United States in 1848. The author chronologically presents Oertel's life from his early mechanical inventions in his hometown of Fuerth to his formal art training in Munich, where he studied under renowned Nazarene painter Johann Michael Ennsing Miiller. His time in Munich was marked by the strong influence of Cornelius and Kaulbach and the friendships he forged with other artists. Seeking new opportunities, Oertel set sail for America in 1848, not as a painter, but as a steel engraver. The stark contrast between his artistic vision and the budding industrial society of his new home left him disillusioned and searching to find his place. He eventually settled in Madison, New Jersey where he established a studio and painted Christian-themed compositions. The author traces Oertel's artistic evolution through his series of designs which he deemed the work of his life: The Dispensations of Promise and the Law, The Redeemer, and The Consummation of Redemption. These monumental compositions, as well as his other works, were characterized by a depth of feeling and technical skill that communicated the artist's deep faith and mastery of the human form. This book presents Oertel as a significant figure whose life and work stood in contrast to the prevailing artistic trends of his time. Through his art he sought to convey the truths of the Christian faith and the human condition, and he left behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists today.
