Central to this evaluation is a reexamination of the Book of Jobâ"a foundational text for understanding how monotheism has grappled with evil throughout history. The author presents three friends visiting Job and engaging him in debate, each offering a different theodicy to explain evil. Job, however, is left unmoved, rejecting each theodicy as insufficient. The author finds this rejection of Job to be a precursor to modern atheism; a reflection of a contemporary crisis of faith in the wake of secularism and materialism. Ultimate, this book argues that the problem of evil provides a unique opportunity to understand the complexity and depth of religious faith.
