This enthralling book chronicles the extraordinary life and foundational scholarly contributions of Richard Bentley, an intellectual giant of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. As a groundbreaking classical critic, Bentley developed innovative methods that transformed the field of scholarship and profoundly influenced subsequent generations. His meticulous philological approach, rigorous textual analysis, and vast knowledge of ancient languages revolutionized the study of classical literature. Beyond his impact on classics, Bentley's work extended to biblical studies, where he proposed a comprehensive plan for constructing the New Testament text directly from its oldest sources. His writings on English style further influenced the transition from the prose of the 17th century to that of the 18th. The author presents Bentley's remarkable personal qualitiesâ"his brilliance, self-assurance, and occasionally combative natureâ"which shaped both his achievements and his tumultuous career as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. This book not only sheds light on Bentley's remarkable contributions to the intellectual landscape of his time but also provides valuable insights into the broader cultural and academic contexts in which he lived and worked.
