This book is a humorous drama that tells the story of a deaf farmer, Kennison Keene, who lives with his red-haired daughter, Nellie, on a farm in the countryside. When a city slicker named Mcullis Pepperill comes to town to court Nellie, he is met with hilarious resistance from her father. Mcullis is told that Nellie is a handful, with a vicious temper and several physical ailments, including rotten teeth and a spavined leg. Meanwhile, a second suitor, the wealthy Bob Pease, shows up to ask for Nellie's hand in marriage. Kennison, learning that Bob is rich, decides to encourage his suit. Of course, the truth about Nellie's character and health must come out eventually, but will Mcullis and Bob still be interested in her when they find out? This charming play provides an entertaining look at love, marriage, and the importance of being yourself. The author's witty dialogue and well-developed characters will keep readers laughing from beginning to end. The play also offers a valuable lesson about the importance of being honest and upfront with those we love.
