It offers insights into the world of Victorian theater and popular entertainment, and provides a unique glimpse into the character and career of one of its most beloved figures. The author has drawn on interviews, letters and other sources to create a portrait of Toole that is both intimate and revealing. He explores Toole's early life, his struggles as a young actor, and his eventual rise to stardom as one of the most celebrated comedians of his time. Along the way, he shares Toole's thoughts on acting, comedy, and the importance of bringing joy to audiences. Through Toole's story, the book also examines the broader social and cultural context of Victorian theater.
