As a Boer commandant, the author provides a unique perspective on the conflict's major battles and skirmishes, including the disastrous defeat at Elandslaagte. The author also details his interactions with the Boer leadership, including the controversial General Joubert, and the psychological toll that the war took on Boer fighters and the civilian population. His detailed account of his capture by the British in 1902 paints a vivid picture of the desperate end to the war for many Boer fighters.
