It begins by presenting a variety of perspectives on the definition of history itself, with specific attention to the work of authors such as Freeman, Madeline, and Droysen. The author then discusses specific elements of history, such as politics, law, and the study of events over time, as additional ways to understand the discipline as a whole. The book concludes by examining how scholars are using these concepts in the study of contemporary history and the preservation of local historical sources. Throughout, the author provides a nuanced and engaging introduction to the field that will be of particular value to students and teachers of history.
